A team of researchers wanted to determine when the average person’s self-esteem is the highest, and we have the excellent news for you – the peak comes much later than your 20s.

The researchers analyzed 191 self-esteem research articles, including over 165,000 individuals. After evaluation, they concluded that self-esteem keeps rising throughout the lifetime. 

It hits a plateau during the teen years – 11 to 15, but it never drops. It is static for a while and again starts increasing. 

The highest confidence occurs around the age of 60, with a slight decline that occurs during our 70s and 80s.

How Does Confidence Increase As We Age? 

As we age, our confidence increases as we learn more about ourselves and the world around us. As a result, we gain experience from life’s many lessons and make mistakes less often. 

Mistakes are a learning tool – the more you make them, the more experienced you are.

No matter what happens to you in life, if something is good or bad, take time to reflect on how this made you feel and let those feelings make positive changes within yourself.

Here are some tips that will help you grow your confidence:

Tip #1 – Embrace Your Strengths.

Take a moment to reflect on what makes you, YOU. Focus on what are your strengths? What do people compliment you about? 

Take those things and start to work on those, as well as those you know you are lacking but require them daily. 

Once you start to work on yourself, gradually, it will boost your confidence, and you’d be able to face the world much better.

Tip #2 – Saying NO is a Must!

Don’t be afraid to say no. Saying no when you want or need to will help build your confidence. When you refuse to stand up for yourself, a little voice in your head will be there to tell you that you should’ve said something. 

People start to walk all over you and take advantage of your niceness. So, learn to say no when you need to. It will be challenging the first time, but practice makes everything easier.

Tip #3 – You Are Your Best Friend.

Be kinder to yourself than anyone else is! Remember, self-care isn’t selfish; it’s necessary for everyone at every age. Self-criticism only gets us down, while kindness builds our strength up. 

Take time out of the day just for YOU to do whatever makes you feel good about who you are as a person – whether this means watching your favorite movie, playing with your pet, talking to friends, etc…

Tip #4 – Surround Yourself with Good People.

Make sure to surround yourself with people who genuinely care for your well-being and support you in every way possible. These people will be the ones that help build up your confidence more than anyone else! These people are not jealous and selfish, they understand the importance of being there for someone.

Tip #5 – Exit the Comfort Zone.

A comfort zone is a place where you feel safe, and your abilities are not tested in any way. You are at home, watching your favorite TV show, and nothing can embarrass you. 

It’s easy to say leave your comfort zone, but how do we do that?

Imagine that you are at the aqua park, and you are the next in line for the giant slide. You sit, put your hands up in the air, and off you go! The same stands for leaving your comfort zone.   

It will take you one minute to book that figure skating class you want to attend and two minutes to ask someone on a date. 

Don’t think. Just send a message, and the fun part is around the corner.

We know this is not a pleasant experience for the first time, but the more you do this sort of thing, the more confident you feel.
