“Sometimes the worst thing that happens to you, the thing you think you can’t survive, is the thing that makes you better than you used to be.” – Jennifer Weiner.
Betrayal is a deep wound, one that feels impossible to heal. But it’s often through these painful experiences that we find our inner strength and grow the most. When confronted with deception, we can either be overwhelmed by the pain or rise above it, becoming stronger and wiser.
Shivangi is a 24-year-old young adult working in the TVS Motors QA department.
Born and raised in Indore, Shivangi completed her engineering degree and went about pursuing a post-graduation degree. She now lives and works in Bangalore.
Shivangi’s hobbies are ever-changing, and they are as unique as herself.
“I used to draw, then I started listening to songs, watching TV series, and learning guitar. Nowadays, I’m reading psychology books that have been recommended by a psychologist. I also enjoy cooking with my flatmate, which has become a new hobby.”
Growing up, Shivangi was close to her younger brother. They have a unique bond, where they respect and love each other. Despite her parents’ busy schedules, their support and motivation have been constant.
“Whatever my brother and I are today, it’s because of my parents. I am very thankful to them.”
However, as time went far and long and childhood turned into adulthood, Shivangi faced some issues over time, which made her turn to therapy for support.
Shivangi first heard about YourDOST through her workplace, which partners with the organisation as their official mental health partner. She chose Ms Nidhi Murali as her counsellor for the days to come.
“Nidhi felt like a friend; she was my age and could relate to my experiences. She was empathetic and a great listener. I could tell her everything without hesitation.”
Shivangi’s decision to seek therapy stemmed from two significant incidents. Six months ago, her father was hospitalised, which was a difficult time for the entire family. Shivangi was already in shambles due to this sudden situation, and another unfortunate event pushed her to the limits.
“Just five to ten days after my father was hospitalised, I discovered a big lie from someone I was in love with. It affected me deeply.”
This person had been Shivangi’s support system, especially when her family was in crisis. She felt utterly lost without his support and could not make a firm decision.
“I decided to give my then-partner a second chance, but I was uncertain if it was the right decision. The saying ‘once a liar, always a liar’ haunted me.”
Shivangi tried moving on in life but often felt anxious, especially when her emotions were at a heightened point. Her hands would shiver, and she was not able to think straight. She gradually understood that it was high time she turned to therapy and sought help from YourDOST.
Confessing her problems to Nidhi brought Shivangi a sense of relief. She finally felt she could talk about her concerns without being judged.
“Nidhi was the first person I confided in about everything. She helped me progress by justifying my decisions and encouraging me to let go of certain things.”
Talking to Nidhi about her stressors and concerns made Shivangi realise she had to relinquish past baggage for the relationship to advance. Nidhi introduced Shivangi to various techniques to manage her anxiety and to have a better outlook on life.
“She recommended books and podcasts, which provided clarity. She also identified that my anxiety was often triggered by things I read online. Nidhi taught me about hindsight bias and anxious attachment where I was dependent on my partner for support, helping me understand my past better.”
These techniques and activities helped Shivangi see a brighter future. She could finally understand and control her thoughts better than ever. Although still on her journey, Shivangi noticed positive changes gradually.
“I’m not as anxious as before. I have answers to some questions, and I’m learning to let go of the ones I don’t.”
Shivangi is in awe of her therapist and cannot thank her enough for her support during the most brutal times of her life.
“I wish Nidhi all the best. It’s rare to find someone who genuinely wishes the best for you, even among friends. If we ever cross paths again, I’d thank her for all her help.”
Shivangi rates herself as 4 out of 5 in terms of feeling better. She envisions improvement as feeling better than before.
We at YourDOST believe Shivangi is on her way to reaching the golden five mark and wish her all the best in the future!
