Meet Janani (name changed), a 24-year-old avid reader and writer. Her love for the arts led her to pursue a Master in Arts at the prestigious SRM University in Sonipat.
She comes from a close-knit family that includes her brother, mother, and father. She mentions that she and her brother have shared a close bond throughout her childhood, and he continues to be one of the most important people in her life.
Growing up, Janani remembers being a shy and introverted kid with a small group of friends. This continued into adulthood, when she mentioned that she is usually reserved when it comes to social situations.
However, she remembers a time during her childhood when this was not the case.
“I was a confident kid and would not get any stage fright, even in events or other situations. It was only when I hit puberty that things started to change.”
She mentions that she started experiencing some negative feelings and thoughts about her image, which she found difficult to break away from. These thoughts and feelings continued to linger even when she moved away from home for college.

She reached a tipping point in college when a few friendships and relationships left her in a blame-game situation. Curious to find a way to break out of this pattern, she decided to seek therapy to face her issues head-on.
She logged onto the YourDOST platform and booked a session with one of the counselors. She mentions thinking about the infinite patience that her counselor showed because she created a safe space for Janani to rant.
Moreover, Janani and her counsellor worked as a team in order to discover the root of her problems. Janani’s counsellor also suggested activities such as breathing exercises and journaling to help her navigate these complicated feelings.
Slowly but steadily, Janani started to see changes in how she was navigating things. She also managed to reconnect with activities she loved as a child to connect with herself.
“In terms of positive changes, I started feeling calmer toward myself, and I stopped blaming myself for everything.”
Janani also mentions that she found a rhythm with her schedule and comfort in her choices. As she moves on her journey, we at YourDOST wish her the best of luck!
